The most successful baseball season

The most successful baseball season in the history of Las Cruces ended yesterday with the Vaqueros falling to the Alpine Cowboys in the deciding game of the championship series.

While many have used the words dream season to describe this years addition of the Vaqueros the reality is that this team could flat out win. They went 9 and 5 in May, 16 and 12 in June, 16 and 12 in July, and 3-2 and August and were the first Vaqueros team to not have a losing month for the length of a season.

An even bigger accomplishment was that the Vaqueros were the only team in the entire Pecos League that did not have a losing record against any of their opponents finishing with a 6 and 4 record against Alpine, a 7 and 6 record against Roswell, a 10 and 6 record against Santa Fe, a 9 and 7 record against Trinidad, and an incredible 13 and 7 record against White Sands. On the field several players had what could also be considered to be dream seasons as several team records were not just broken but beaten multiple times by multiple players. RF Logan Lotti hit 23 homeruns destroying Clint Strouds old record of 15 in a season while Pecos League MVP Steve Rinaudo set new team records for Runs (99) , Hits (110) , Doubles (24), and Triples (9). The previous records were 78 hits, 52 runs, 14 doubles, and 2 triples showing that Rinaudo had the greatest season of any Vaquero ever.

On the mound, Justin Yackee set a new team record for appearances with 35 and Derek Johnson was the first player in team history to throw 2 complete games.

For the fans, the season felt to good to be true also. During the All-Star game a fan approached pitching coach Mike Nassisi and mentioned that seeing 5 Vaqueros on the field at the same time felt like a dream and could not be real. Nassisis answer was Why can"t it be both?

I guess in the end, having it be both is what this team and this league is about.

Las Cruces scored four times in the first and added another run in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead, but Alpine answered with seven runs in the fifth and never relinquished control. The Cowboys added two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth. Alpine collected 12 hits, led by Ben Ives with three hits, two runs and one RBI. Justin McDavid went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while J. Carranza hit a home run and drove in three runs. N. Ochoa also homered and finished with two hits, two runs and three RBIs. Brett Kennedy started for the Cowboys and surrendered five runs on seven hits in four innings, with only one run recorded as earned. Alpines bullpen held Las Cruces scoreless over the final four innings, with Andrew Plotkin, Kevin Johnson, Bryant Asnicar and Alfredo Caballero combining for four scoreless innings and nine strikeouts. Shawn Kale took the loss for Las Cruces after allowing eight runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings. The Vaqueros finished with nine hits and scored twice in the sixth, but Alpines 13-run attack and early second-half surge secured the victory.

August 3 2012 The Las Cruces Vaqueros defeated the Roswell Invaders 7-5 at Apodaca Park, overcoming a 12-hit performance by Roswell. Las Cruces scored seven runs on 10 hits and committed no errors, while Roswell finished with two errors.

Las Cruces took control with three runs in the second inning and added single runs in the third fifth sixth and eighth. Roswell answered with two runs in the third, one in the seventh and two more in the ninth, but the Vaqueros held on for the victory.

Trevor Whyte led Las Cruces with three hits in four at-bats, including a home run and a double, while scoring three runs and driving in one. Logan Lotti also homered and had one RBI. Jesse Olivar contributed a triple and two RBIs, and Kevin Wager added two hits, including a double.

White Sands finished with 14 hits but was held scoreless after the fifth inning.

Logan Lotti led the Vaqueros with three hits, four runs and four RBIs, while Patrick Nolan added four RBIs. Steve Rinaudo scored three runs, collected two hits, drove in one and hit a home run. Randy Wells and Will Stramp each had three hits, and Wells contributed two RBIs. Las Cruces also received home runs from Lotti and Rinaudo.

White Sands was paced by John Couch, who went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a home run. M. Mendoza scored twice and drove in one run, while C. Rigby and Jordan Stouffer each had two hits. Austin Newell also homered for the Pupfish.

Ben Ives led Alpine with one hit and three RBI, while Eric Garcia doubled and drove in two runs. Chris Davis added a double and an RBI, and Derrick Fox contributed a triple. Ives and E. Herman each scored twice, and Alpine stole three bases, including two by Ives.

The Pecos League of Professional Baseball Clubs will play two regular season games in El Paso for the first time. The Las Cruces Vaqueros and Alpine Cowboys will play two 7 inning doubleheaders in Cohen Stadium on July 26, games will begin at 6:00 PM The El Paso Diablos have agreed to let the Pecos League play these games and will sell $1 beer. The Vaqueros and Cowboys will each have one suite for fans. Fans from both cities are invited out to the game. The Regular Season ends July 31, 2012 and currently both of these teams are in the top three teams trying to secure a home playoff game. The Pecos League has teams in Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Roswell, Alamogordo, Alpine and Trinidad Colorado.

The Vaqueros also scored three times in the sixth and twice in the ninth. Trinidad answered with three runs in the first, five in the second, one in the sixth, one in the seventh and one in the ninth, but could not overcome the deficit.

S. Rinaudo powered the Las Cruces offense by going 5-for-6 with four runs and six RBI. He hit two home runs and a triple. R. Wells added two hits, two runs and three RBI, including a home run, while K. Wager hit a home run and finished with two hits and one RBI. Las Cruces hit four home runs overall, with T. Las Cruces broke the game open with a nine-run second inning after taking a 2-1 lead in the first. The Vaqueros added two runs in the third and fourth innings, one in the sixth and four in the seventh. Trinidad answered with four runs in the third and fifth innings and three in the ninth but could not overcome the early deficit.

Roswell built a 7-6 lead through five innings after scoring five runs in the fifth. Las Cruces answered with two runs in the sixth and three in the eighth, but the Invaders scored four in the eighth to tie the game at 11-11. Roswell then pushed across five runs in the 10th, while Las Cruces managed one in the bottom half.

Josh Cakebread led Roswell with three hits, three runs and three RBI, including two doubles. AJ Morris added four hits and two RBI, while Reggie Taylor and Wes Kartch each drove in two runs. Logan Lotti led Las Cruces with three hits four runs two RBIs two doubles and a triple. Trevor Whyte went 2-for-3 with four runs four RBIs and a home run while Steve Rinaudo had four hits and four RBIs including two doubles and two triples. Jimmy Parque added three hits three runs and one RBI and Randy Wells contributed two hits four runs and four RBIs.

Roswell received a three-hit five-RBI performance from Brian Ramirez who homered and scored four runs. Brycen Bell had three hits and two RBIs while Wes Kartch hit a home run and drove in three runs. The Invaders scored three runs in the first six in the third five in the fourth and two in the eighth but could not keep pace with Las Cruces.

White Sands scored six runs in the second inning, added two in the fourth and one in the seventh. Las Cruces answered with three runs in the second, two in the third and four in the ninth. The Vaqueros were led by Trevor Whyte, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI, including a home run. Randy Wells added three hits and an RBI, while Sal Rivera drove in three runs.

With the Pecos League"s contract with Rawlings the Vaqueros will use a Rawlings MLB Ball with blue seems and blue ink. The ball will sport the Vaqueros logo and be a hit with fans and collectors. The Baseballs will be for sale at PecosLeague.com in late April.
